In January 2023 the Asia-Pacific celebrates the New Year twice: there’s New Year on 01 January, or course, and then the Lunar or Chinese New Year when we welcome the Year of the Rabbit. With China finally dropping its zero-Covid policy and quarantine restrictions, businesses in Asia are hoping for a quick kick start to the tourism industry over the Chinese New Year holiday period. There is plenty of positive news at the start of 2023. APSA is especially pleased to welcome a new APSA member, Frigomar srl from Italy and the Maldives which has seen a major increase in superyacht visitors, with 18 yachts currently cruising in this tropical paradise.

As the world opens back up with travel, the Maldives, with her many attractions, is welcoming an increasing number of luxury vessels. “The tropical getaway saw 18 superyachts the first week of January, compared with only one two months ago”, according to a story on Bloomberg.com (6th January 2023).

Sevenstar Yacht Transport is the first company to receive certification for its transport cradles from Lloyd’s Register, one of the most reputable marine classification societies in the maritime industry. This certification gives clients another assurance that their yacht or floating cargo is in the safest hands and will be delivered safely to any desired destination.

Maritime Cook Islands (MCI), the Administrators of the Cook Islands Ships Registry, is pleased to announce the appointment of the newly formed Management Board – Moeroa Matheson, Paolo Favilli and Eleanor Roi. Effective from the 01st December 2022, the Management Board will serve as Co-CEOs, succeeding the role and responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer of the company.

Düsseldorf Boat Show 2023, is being held from 21 to 29 January 2023 in Messe Düsseldorf. Some of the superyacht highlights include Sanlorenzo and Bluegame and Fairline which are all represented in Asia by Simpson Marine. Attracting more than 250,000 visitors, Europe’s largest indoor boat show is a true highlight of the boating calendar.

The Cayman Islands is a world leader in ship registration, remaining the flag of choice for owners of super yachts. The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (Cayman Registry) is proud to be celebrating 120 years of maritime tradition and business in the Cayman Islands.

This “little” yacht that can cruise far! At 33 metres, this is the smallest of the OCEA Commuter family of yachts, but it still offers amenities comparable to those of larger yachts. Designing a transoceanic yacht based on commuter boats designed for short trips on a river was no easy feat.

With brilliant blue waters, expansive coral reefs and hundreds of peaceful islands: Fiji is not a hard sell and was listed as one of CNN’s top tourist destinations for 2023. For one, the country only reopened post-Covid at the end of 2021, meaning that visitor numbers to the South Pacific paradise have yet to fully rebound.

Starting in 2023 Beran Island will be open 12 months a year offering diving and sport fishing holidays. Indies Trader Marine Adventures are in the process of structuring these packages but have the schedule open and are happy to take bookings. Both the diving and fishing at the island are world class and the Indies Trader team cannot wait to show the world.

Strategic marketing and innovative ideas are the focus of the new look Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef committee. "We see 2023 as a global restart in destination marketing promoting the Great Barrier Reef and our members world class services with the support of our innovative new team" said Virginia Edwards, who guides the group as manager with the assistance of Business Administrator Carol Harris.

The Marine Industry Association (MIA) in Australia is pleased to announce the launch of the much-anticipated Superyacht Ready accreditation. Superyacht Ready is designed to help skippers and owners identify marinas that have the capacity and capabilities required to provide safe and adequate berthing for superyachts. Gold Coast City Marina is the first APSA member to receive the accreditation. 

SYBAss Winter Update 2023 included the thirteenth edition of the SYBAss Economic Report which again was compiled by Erik Floor, Eric Prinsen and Eric van der Knaap. All formerly working for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), they compiled the report as independent advisors using data from Forbes, BCG, Wealth-X and SuperYacht Times.

The Water Revolution Foundation launched the first version of the highly-anticipated Yacht Environmental Transparency Index  at METSTRADE 2022, and shared it with key members of the industry. The tool, which scores and compares yachts based on their environmental credentials, emphasises the operational efficiency of a yacht’s lifecycle and tackles ecological impact by benchmarking vessels against an average operational profile.
