Azimut | Benetti Grande Trideck

APSA asks the Azimut | Benetti shipyard about its Grande Trideck and why this yacht should interest be of interest to yachting enthusiasts in the Asia-Pacific region. Currently making its first transatlantic appearance at the FLIBS, the Azimut Grande Trideck forms part of another highly successful Grande Collection.

The Asia-Pacific has a number of Azimut and Benetti yacht owners and how will the Trideck meet the needs of these owners who are looking to upgrade?

We may say that Azimut Yachts ends where Benetti starts: I mean that Azimut owners and Benetti owners are different, despite the size of the biggest Azimut model is now very close to that of some Benetti models.

Trideck is the perfect yacht for those Azimut owners who want to go bigger and experience a different way to cruise: much more informal and with a strong connection between outside and inside. The interiors have in fact moved away from the traditional arrangement of on-board spaces to create an environment that reflects the lifestyle of today’s owners who are seeking versatility and informality so that they can truly relax and entertain guests in comfort.

2. How important is the new D2P hull for clients in the Asia-Pacific region. Is fuel efficiency important to this group of clients and how do the clients in the AP Region use their yacht differently to European or USA clients.

Cutting emissions and sustainability are topics that none may ignore nowadays, no matter their social and/or economic level and their geographical origins and, of course, our owners are no exception. The first of the most significant elements of the Trideck from a technological point of view is the debut of the new second-generation D2P® Displacement to Planning hull.

This hull is based on the combination of three main elements: the double chine, which gives stability at displacement speeds while reducing drag at higher speeds; the bow wavepiercer, increasing the hull length at the waterline, reducing displacement consumption and reducing pitching in rough seas, and finally the central skeg, that guarantees optimal course stability, especially in aft quartering seas.

It was created to yield unrivaled results in terms of efficiency. The Grande 35Metri, featuring the first generation D2P hull was already best in class, and the second-generation debuts on the Trideck with substantial improvements. Despite being 3 meters longer, 30 GT larger and 35 tons heavier, the Trideck consumes fuel at the same rate as her smaller sister at all speeds above 19 kts, and manages to be 15% more efficient at a cruising speed of 15 kts. To put these results in context, when compared with a traditional hard chine hull, the improvement in displacement fuel efficiency reaches over 40%.

3. How many Trideck yachts have been sold to Asia Pacific clients? Are there any design features that makes this yacht more adapted to use in the Asia-Pacific Region?

So far we sold one Trideck in the AP region and customers from this area are more and more focusing on the different functions and indoor areas. The interior design fully embraces the cause of the shipyard: to offer the market a redefinition of the role of space, giving new functionality to the onboard environments. And it works on two levels which are function and style. This carries out a functional rethinking of the interior spaces, for which Achille Salvagni abandons the preconceived functions of each area. The goal is to transform the yacht into a place where the owner can live without constraints, in a more liquid and accommodating space. To this end, the interiors have been dilated and integrated with the external areas, to become extensions of one another, a harmonious continuum.

4. Carbon fibre is used in the superstructure, but is carbon fibre used in other parts of the yacht and will there be more use of carbon fibre in the future? How important are weight considerations in a yacht of this size?

The Trideck is the newest member of the Carbon Generation, with her entire superstructure laminated in carbon fibre for a 30%, which allows a local reduction in weight and an absolute weight reduction of 6 tons. Furthermore, the carbon superstructure means a significant improvement in performance: lower fuel consumption, higher speed and longer range.

5. Besides fuel efficiency are there any green or environment features that stand out? Utilisation of energy onboard the yacht?

There are also other solutions that we adopt and that have a great impact too, such as the choice of sustainable materials, for the construction (i.e. environmentally friendly water and gelcoat glue) furnishing or décor. The Trideck features an advanced power management system by SeaEnergy, which allows the automatic optimization of onboard electricity consumption through a perfect balance of shore power and the generators (or only between generators when at sea) depending on the energy needs of utilities.

For even more freedom, owners can also add Hotel Mode to the Trideck. This means being able to relax, anchored in a bay with zero emissions and in total silence. With a lithium battery pack of about 130 kWh, the Trideck can operate the main onboard utilities with the generators switched off for up to 4 hours during the day and 8 hours at night.

7. As the Flagship for Azimut Yachts how has the Trideck set the brand ahead of  competitors?  Which design features have worked well and are there any design features that will need reviewing in the future now that the Yacht has been launched?

Grande Trideck is the first triple-decker and the largest boat ever built by the shipyard and a symbol of the brand’s innovative DNA now available for order in Asia.
