This is APSA’s 10th anniversary and in the last 10 years we have seen a huge upswing in the business of yachting in Asia fueled by many yachts visiting from the West and a large swell of domestic demand.

The Sanlorenzo Explorer line continues to demonstrate its success with the sale of the 9th unit, a 47metres long superyacht sold b Sanlorenzo Asia represented by Simpson Marine in 2022.

Azure Yacht Crew Health was founded by yachting professionals and is providing one of the most modern and comprehensive global health insurance packages designed and built from the ground up purely for professional superyacht crew.

The third episode of the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association’s (APSA) virtual cruise took place on 26 January, and saw the good ship m/y APSA sampling the delights and facilities of Phuket before moving down the Kra Peninsula to Singapore, and then crossing the world’s busiest shipping lane to the island chain that is Indonesia.

Marevisio was founded by Godfrey Zwygart, who has been influential in Asia’s yachting circles for decades. First created in Hong Kong in 2018 and established in the Hainan Free Trade Zone in 2020, Zwygart is a former Navy Officer and megayacht Captain, with a profound understanding of Chinese culture and society.

Simpson Marine, Asia’s leading yacht sales and services company, reports a very busy year in 2020 with sales of over 200 million USD and 112 new and pre-owned yachts sold in 2020. Founded in 1984 by Mike Simpson, over the years Simpson Marine has gone from strength to strength, cementing its position as market leader in Asia. 

Sri Lanka has opened its border for tourists, mainly for those arriving by air and booked into hotels in the travel bubble. Priyantha Perera, heading up Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) in Sri Lanka, believes the next consideration will be the opening up to cruising tourism.

In spite of the challenges and vicissitudes of 2020, this year Benetti launched16 yachts and will continue to make a splash in 2021. The Global Order Book reviewed 179 shipyards worldwide, where yachts over 24 metres in length are being built, and identified Azimut/Benetti as having a 12% share of the market in this segment based on the 821 projects analysed. 

The latest European shipyard to set up an Australian based sales office – Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) - has entered a strategic partnership with the southern hemisphere’s most comprehensive and awarded marine facility, Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) for preferred service and repair of all vessels sold in Australia.

Travel Cue are starting this year on a high note with Parent company Connect Group being recognised as one of the fastest-growing companies in Singapore (based on the company’s strong revenue growth for the last 3 years) in a study compiled by The Straits Times and global research firm Statista.

With this collaboration, Burgess aims to better serve its existing clients and build new relationships in India, while enhancing its charter offering in the Indian Ocean: India, Maldives and Sri Lanka. Much like the Far East, this region holds substantial long- term potential for the business. 

The 60 metre Benetti motor yacht Andreas L, jointly listed for sale by Burgess with Edminton & Company, has been sold with the buyer introduced by 37 South. Andreas L is one of an acclaimed series of yachts from Benetti, and designer by designed by Stefano Natucci.

Yacht operators can benefit from French Commercial Exemption (FCE) in 2021 even if they have been unable to make the necessary trips usually required to qualify. The Covid-19 pandemic has meant many vessels have not been able to meet the qualifying requirements of 70% navigation outside French waters. However, a relaxation of the rules means operators may still qualify for 2021.

S/Y TARONGA was designed by the legendary designers at Sparkman & Stephens and was the number six of only 11 Maxi 88s built between 1989 and 2005 at the CIM shipyard in Rochefort, France. The sailing yacht underwent extensive modifications from CIM engineers in 2013/2014 and an exterior and interior refit in 2017, rendering her in superb condition.

The Asia Pacific Superyacht Association (APSA) officially established in 2011 reaches its 10 year mark this year. APSA was the first association to be established in Asia with a regional focus on promoting Asian yachting businesses and providing a platform for global businesses to connect with the Asia yachting community. A decade on and APSA is in a positive position to promote the region.
