Great Barrier Reef Region wins big at Superyacht Industry Marine Awards

SuperYacht Group Great Barrier Reef (SYGGBR) was named Australian superyacht industry service provider of the year at the Australian Superyacht Industry Marine Awards last night (Thursday May 22).

“This is a fantastic result which recognises our members hard work in ensuring Cairns and the region is front and centre on the international Super Yacht stage,” SYGGBR Manager Joanne Drake said.

“We have amazing capabilities offered here, providing everything a Superyacht needs from stunning marinas and a water wonderland to explore, to world-class maintenance and marine services industry.  Going forward, we are very excited to be piloting a new program with Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef by offering visiting superyachts an opportunity of playing a part in the important research and preservation of the Great Barrier Reef.”

In a second big win for the night, Cairns’ Spirit Luxury Charters took out the Voyage of the Year Award for a private 10-day charter conducted from Cairns Marlin Marina to Lizard Island including snorkelling opportunities at numerous spots on the Great Barrier Reef before returning to Crystalbrook SuperYacht Marina in Port Douglas.

Spirit Captain Martin Debanks said the award was a timely reminder that the Great Barrier Reef - the largest coral reef in the world – “is without a doubt one of nature’s greatest gift to us all”.

“There has been some damaging publicity over the past few years, and while some concern has been warranted, some has been purely sensationalist,” he said.  “The Reef is very much alive, with over 3000 reef systems and cays and an abundance of marine life.

“Myself and the rest of my crew are passionate about its ongoing survival and we love sharing our experiences with others.”

Ms Drake said the Cairns region’s reputation as a global superyacht “hot spot” is growing and the SYGGBR will continue to work collaboratively with its members to provide an independent “one stop shop” for Superyachts visiting, or looking to visit, charter or refit in the region.

“It was also wonderful to have so many of our members in attendance at the gala dinner during the 2019 Australian Superyacht & Marine Export conference at the Gold Coast,” she added.
